Gamer Girlfriend Problems

I've talked about my boyfriend, Darell, quite a few times on this blog. I've talked about him in a few posts, and he helps out with my Youtube channel most of the time, although you almost never see him on camera.

If you have ever read any of my tweets, you'll occasionally find a few of me complaining of having a boyfriend who is a gamer. Growing up, I always wanted to be able to play videogames with the boys, but it was always games from the Mario and friends series, like Super Smash Bros. and fighting games, like my personal favorite, the Dynasty Warriors series.

When I was a kid, my cousins tried teaching me how to play Halo because I like videogames and I wanted to learn. However, with the pressure of playing live and with all the different controls to shoot and check your map and trying to hide from other players, I always got really overwhelmed and I sucked.

When I started dating Darell, he decided to teach me Call of Duty when he was still into those games. Needless to say, even years later, I still sucked.

He's been over those first-person-shooter games for a couple years now and has a new favorite game.

It's called League of Legends.

Basic premise of the game: In case you didn't know, League of Legends (or League or LoL as gamers call it), is a free computer game that you can download onto your computer. You play a certain "champion" (that's your character) and you play on a team of 5. Your ultimate goal is to destroy the enemy team's base.

League is one of the most widely played games if not the most (Darell will probably correct me on this one) in the world. For starting out within the past 3 or 4 years, the game has grown at a very impressive amount, by having over 32 million players.

I don't play the game myself, but Darell taught me how to play last week. The game is pretty interesting if you ask me, but you have to understand what is happening in order to do so. Especially if you're not much of a gamer like I am, you just think it's a dumb game that is taking your boyfriend away from you. I still suck at the game like I do with all live games, but I'm okay just watching.

Even though I have a much better understanding for the game, doesn't mean that I still don't have issues with my boyfriend playing the game as often as he does.

Some gamer girlfriend problems:

1. He ignores you for the game.
This is a classic move for the gamer. You try to call or text them to talk to them, but they'll either ignore you tell you they're busy (points if they tell the truth and say they're playing the game). Even if you were with them in person, you could do or say whatever you want and they still won't pay attention to you.

2. You think it's a phase, and two months later you realize this "phase" won't be going away anytime soon.
Before Darell got super into League, this was only a phase. He started playing it when it first came out, then he'd get over it after a couple months and I was happy. He repeated this cycle about two more times before becoming super addicted to it. His addict level has simmered down since then and it's a more healthy balance of playing the game and doing other things. It could be a healthier gaming time limit, but considering how bad it was before, his time spent playing now is much better.

3. He references it in real life.
Darell has taught one of the little boys at church to call me one of the champions' names. They'll occasionally make other references with the way the game is played, how strategizing works and other things like that. It can get annoying if done excessively.

4. If he's in the middle of a game, whatever you want to/need to do has to wait.
It's pretty self explanatory. It has kept me from filming more Youtube videos for my channel because of it. We have even gone so far as to go to a meetup to meet one of Darell's favorite PROFESSIONAL teams! This community is only growing and I don't think it will stop anytime soon.

Have I missed anything? Can anyone relate? (Please, I hope I'm not the only one haha.) What games do your boyfriends play, if any?

  1. Hahah! My boyfriend is obsessed with games. He used to work for a video game company so I guess it just never left. I also spend a lot of time playing games though, so I kind of understand. I just wish that when I'm not playing games he wouldn't either hahah!

  2. My brother plays that game maybe 8 hours a day or more. But I have always end up with guys that are gamers because like you I grew up playing and knew how to play. But dating a gamer has good and bad things, but I think all boyfriends have their good and bad.

  3. My BF isn't much of a gamer...although to be honest I wouldn't mind if he was! I've had gamer bfs in the past and it's never been an issue for me. Personally, I like watching gamers. I love video games but I'm never any good at it, so watching it is so much more satisfying for me. I used to play WoW and Skyrim for a short time, and when I had an x-box I used to get on to to play with my guy at the time. It was fun! Even though I sucked haha.

  5. You posted a picture of me playing League on a MacBook you make me look like a peasant! Shoulda used a recent picture when I already built my PC. Haha anyways. Good post. 10/10 would read again.

  8. My boyfriend enjoys playing video games, but I'm not sure that I would call him a gamer. He does play Halo and Battlefield and Grand Theft Auto, but he doesn't ignore me when he's playing them or anything. Now that we're living together, he plays his games while I blog, so it kind of works out.

  9. Oh man! My husband used to play video games all the time until we moved in together. I want him to play more games so I can have more blog time!! :P

  10. Hmm yeah I can see how this can be a problem and kinda of annoying. My BF is a gamer, but not really serious....he will play a game for a few weeks then gets bored and stops for months at a time. He won't spend all day playing either...but I can relate to feeling left out, because I totally suck at video games. Well my BF is also much older so maybe that's whey he's not as obsessed with playing video games. Hope your BF out grows it and doesn't ruin the relationship.

  12. tell your boyfriend a fellow summoner says hello!

  13. Haha that is understandable if he used to work for a video game company. That's cool that you play with him too though, I wish I were better at games to do so. And I also agree on that last part too!

  14. Wow your brother is definitely a gamer too! My boyfriend doesn't do that all the time, but he can definitely do that especially if he stays home all day. And yeah, every trait has their good and bad sides to it, it's just up to the person to figure out how they want to deal with it.

  15. Haha that is great! And wow you used to play WoW and Skyrim too? I'm pretty sure Darell (my boyfriend) would appreciate if I played games like that too haha.

  18. That was my most recent tweet with the hashtag! And why are you rating this? haha of course you'd like a post that was about you and gaming.

  19. My boyfriend used to like playing Halo and Battlefield too! He still plays GTA every now and then though. But that's a good balance he has with still communicating with you when he plays. And I never thought of using videogame time as blog time. I'll have to utilize that more when I'm with him then!

  20. Haha he just wants to spend more time with you! That's great though that you'd be productive with that time.

  21. That's how my boyfriend used to be! I wish he'd be like that still sometimes, haha. And yeah age does also play a factor into this. I hope that he grows out of this too!

  22. Omg yes! We should create like a gamer girlfriend support group/forum or even a LoL one haha. My boyfriend (the guy who responded to your comment too haha) does that exact same thing! Does your boyfriend go on Reddit for it too?

    ReplyDelete
  23. Lol, then you guys could do raids together. :) aw da cute. I used to but I just don't have the equipment for games like that. That and I found blogging ;) haha.

  24. I had an ex like that.. I understand what you're going through lol

    ReplyDelete
  25. Yes, we should! I could use the support. Lol
I'm not sure if he does use Reddit, but he might now that I mention this post to him. Haha

    ReplyDelete
  26. That is so funny. Hahaha I'll have to keep you in mind if I ever need to vent to someone about my boyfriend playing too much! Has he taught you how to play? Or do you watch him play?

    ReplyDelete
  27. Definitely! I may need someone to vent to, too! Haha.
He hasn't taught me, although I feel like I could understand it because he's told me so much about it, and I've been on a few skype chats with him while he was playing with friends. It's very interesting to hear all the guys talk about it. Lol

  28. haha, it's true! But the other day he was telling me how sad he is he doesn't play games anymore and I'm just over here saying "Go play games!" I mean really, we don't have kids yet so it is the perfect videogame time.
